If you listened to progressive talking heads you would think people who believe this ideology are the most generous, kind, and giving people there are. You might initially be correct; until you disagree with one of them.
To be fair, there are some progressives that do denounce some of the rabid hypocrisy that exists in the more fringe elements of the movement. This is unfortunately not the prevalent stance. The people with slight disagreements are met with backlash and called “Nazis” or “white supremacists” even if the critic is a self-identified “deeply progressive” Jew. The more “rational” progressives sit on the sidelines and refuse to take sides in this discourse.
Take Bret Weinstein; an evolutionary biology professor at Evergreen state college. Every year, minority students take one “day of absence”. The goal of this day of absence is to show how much minorities mean to the college. In 2017, they took it a step further. Instead of minority students leaving campus for a day as a form of protest, they demanded that all white professors leave campus. Weinstein who is a progressive (and Jewish) refused to take part in this protest. He agreed with
He agreed with the reasoning of the protest but did not want to leave his job since he felt the students had overstepped their boundaries. He tried to reason with them and to open up dialogue, but to no avail. The only thing these miscreant students wanted was for him to be fired by the school president that they had held hostage during this whole process. Why did they do this? Because of racism, and if you don’t go along with them you're a racist and are feeding into the system of white supremacy.
This is not to say that all progressives are like these students. It does show that there is a problem the left has that it does not want to acknowledge. It shows that the left is turning on itself for even the slightest bit of disagreement.
Many people who once considered themselves progressives are seeing these sort of events take place and are rethinking their ideology. Take former host for popular progressive internet show “The Young Turks” Dave Rubin. Dave began to rethink his political ideology back when Sam Harris questioned Ben Affleck’s traditional progressive view of Islam on Bill Maher’s show. For anybody who doesn’t know, Sam Harris is a Liberal Hillary Clinton supporter and an extremely intelligent commentator.
He cited Pew Research data suggesting significant portions of Muslims who are not terrorists support similar radical beliefs to terrorists. Affleck immediately called Harris “gross and racist”. The only thing Sam Harris did was state a fact and Affleck launched into a frenzy after his worldview was slightly questioned.
In contrast, the right has a very ideologically diverse constituency. Dave Rubin has changed his mind on many issues since then. He still holds many beliefs that most conservatives would be opposed to. Dave is an atheist, a married homosexual man who is pro-choice and believes in reforming the prison system. Dave identifies himself as a classical liberal which means he is as fiscally conservative as an American can be. This is a far cry from someone who used to believe that the 1% should be taxed into oblivion and the welfare state should be given a blank check.
What does the left think of Dave? According to him, all the progressives he has invited onto his show have turned down his invitations and all the conservatives he has invited on are pretty evident since they are all on his YouTube channel.
