Donald Trump, while on the election path in 2016, warned about rising crime rates across the United States, his critics pointed to an overall decrease in violent crime in the past 25 years. Those same people failed to recognize that the violent crime rates in mostly democrat controlled cities are raising the national average.
According to FBI statistics, in 2016 alone there were 765 reported homicides and 800-1600 rapes (depending on the definition). There were also around 15,000 cases of aggravated assault. This is a horrifying amount of violent crimes in one area over just one year. And the increasing racial and political divide in the US is not helping.
The increased hatred towards the police combined with every shooting being put under the spotlight, causes any police officer to hesitate when being faced with a life or death situation in fear of the public backlash. This is a danger to everyone living in Chicago, and it's gotten so bad it's driven up national statistics. A Brennan Center for Justice study showed that Chicago accounted for a fifth of nationwide murder increase in 2016.
FBI statistics also show that crime in Michigan has risen to double the national average. The statistics showed an increase of 9 percent to about 45,000 violent crimes last year. Detroit alone accounts for one-third of all violent crimes in the state. Detroit, once home to a population of about 2,000,000 people, is now in shambles, and only has 672,800 residents.
The National Institute for Literacy estimates that 47% of adults (200,000 people) in the City of Detroit are functionally illiterate (refers to an individuals inability to use reading, writing, speaking, and using computational skills in everyday life). The definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result. Detroit hasn't voted Republican since 1957, and Chicago is considered one of the largest Democratic strongholds in the US.
We need to figure out a way to help these communities, in any way we can (except "reinvigorating them with arts"). Policies aren't working, and people in these cities are afraid to go outside, and the media cares about the NFL vs. Trump. What a time to be alive!
